Custom Checkout Fields
Custom checkout fields add your own inputs to a product's order form, so the buyer can give you extra information, such as a size note or a gift message. Their answers are saved on the order.
Before you start
Custom fields are part of the Growth, Pro and Enterprise plans. On other plans, the Custom Fields card in Apps takes you to the plans page instead. See Subscription and billing.
Turn on the app
- Open Apps and click Custom Fields.
- Turn on Enable custom fields.
- Click Save Settings.
This switch only turns the app on or off for your store. You create the fields on each product.
Add fields to a product
- Open Products and edit the product.
- Scroll to Custom Checkout Fields.
- Click Add field. A product can have up to 3 fields.
- For each field, set:
- Field label: the question the buyer sees, up to 60 characters.
- Field type: Short text, Long text or Number.
- Placeholder: optional hint text shown inside the empty input.
- Max length: for text fields, the longest answer allowed, up to 500 characters.
- Minimum and Maximum: for number fields, the allowed range.
- Required: tick it if the buyer must answer before ordering.
- Click Save Product.
To remove a field, click Remove field.
What the buyer sees
The fields appear on the product page's order form. A buyer cannot place the order until every required field is filled in and each answer fits the limits you set.
Read and edit the answers
The buyer's answers are shown on the order. You can also fill them in or change them under Custom Fields when you use New Order or Edit order. See Order lifecycle.
Answers are stored under the field's label. If you rename a field after orders already have answers, those orders keep the answer under the old label, and Edit order shows the renamed field empty beside it. Rename fields before you start taking orders.
Turn the app off
Turning off Enable custom fields hides the fields from the product form and from your storefront. It does not delete them: they come back when you turn the app on again.
